History of Dairy Crest Limited
The Duke of Devonshire established a creamery at Hartington in the 1870s. The site was eventually bought by Thomas Nuttall, a cheesemaker from Melton Mowbray, who had already won numerous local prizes for his abilities as a maker of Stilton. In 1974, the factory was extensively redeveloped on the original site. Dairy Crest now makes almost 20% of the country's Stilton.
